96% Monsters, Inc. 3D

All Critics (190) | Top Critics (40) | Fresh (195) | Rotten (8) | DVD (46)

It may be harder nowadays to dazzle audiences with fancy visual effects, but Monsters, Inc. 3D proves that smart, imaginative storytelling still does the trick every time.

Most of the charm of "Monsters Inc." comes from its vocal cast.

If history is any guide, you and your family - whether young or old - will probably want to see "Monsters University" over and over.

The movie itself stands up well, even from an adult, two-dimensional perspective.

Its reassuring message is more relevant than ever.

The good guys are those who realize that laughter is stronger than fear. That's a message worth taking to heart these jittery days.

Pixar's overlooked gem arrives in a worthwhile collector's edition bursting with features and exceptional A/V presentation.

While nippers will love the colourful creatures and their slapstick antics, grown-ups will find less humour and layers than in the likes of Toy Story, meaning less overall appeal as a result.

[I] really don't see the point of paying extra for children under eight. Their eyes are still developing, their noses are still small for slippery glasses, and... isn't a trip to the pictures enough for them in any case?

If anything, it improves with age.

Monsters displays wonderful imagination which makes it worth reliving in an extra dimension - particularly the energetic chase scene along a conveyor belt of doors.

Pixar's soaringly lovely fourth feature ...

[An] exciting, imaginative and very likable adventure.

Despite its eternal message about physical differences and the importance of love over fear of the unknown, Monsters, Inc primarily remains an ambitious concept film.

It's in the visuals that 'Monsters Inc' comes to life, from the jazzy, Norman McLaren influenced opening to the hilarious, shakycam amateur-dramatic recap over the closing credits.

Another chance to see Pixar's most dazzling premise, now spruced up with a third dimension.

Now in 3D, the filmmakers have created a wonderful reality - the reality of Monstropolis, which like the worlds of Oz and Pleasantville, whisk us far, far away on a magic carpet of fantasy

A shrewdly timed reminder of Pixar's early, heady days, when the animation powerhouse could do no wrong.

This didn't need 3D to work. It long ago passed the kids-wear-out-the-DVD-rewatching-it test.

There's really little reason to check out Monsters, Inc. 3D in... well, 3D, rather than going for a good old-fashioned 2D screening instead.

It does well, but not brilliantly: an amusing trifle from a studio whose best work still lay ahead of it.

Not quite a Pixar classic, but funny, witty and visually spectacular enough to be enjoyed again on the big screen.

Monsters, Inc. continues a positive 3D trend for the company, who appear to be selecting their upgraded titles wisely, choosing features that benefit from the additional depth.

Not even the opportunistic 3D-ification can squander the pure delight of the film's meticulously detailed world of ragtag creatures.

(AP) ? Kenya's top two presidential candidates held their final rallies before large and raucous crowds Saturday, a day of political attacks and denials following published comments attributed to the prime minister that election violence could be worse than in 2007-08.

Monday's vote is the first nationwide election since Kenya's December 2007 vote devolved into tribe-on-tribe violence that killed more than 1,000 people. Kenyan leaders and community groups have been working to ensure that massive violence isn't repeated, but fears linger that bloodshed will reappear.

The Financial Times in a story Saturday quoted Prime Minister Raila Odinga ? one of the two top presidential candidates ? as saying he knows his opponents are planning to rig the vote and "I have warned them the consequences may be worse than last time round. The people will not stomach another rigging."

Odinga denied making the statement and told a stadium full of supporters that the story was a "total fabrication." He said his campaign would petition the courts if it felt the results were problematic. An earlier statement said Odinga felt "absolutely slandered" and included a quote it said Odinga gave the paper:

"I am aware that my opponents are scaring my supporters so that they can migrate from where they registered in order to cut the spread of my vote. It is a form of rigging and Kenyans will not accept it. ... I will still win this election despite this dirty campaign."

The Financial Times did not release an audio recording of the interview.

Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta ? Odinga's top challenger ? called Odinga's words "dangerous and inflammatory" and he called on Odinga to retract them.

"We have in public, and our words and deeds throughout this election ? all of us presidential candidates ? committed to campaign in this election in peace, and just as importantly, to accept the result in peace," Kenyatta said. "So then why is it that at the most delicate time in the election campaign Raila sought to use such dangerous, inflammatory words?"

Rigging and cheating are a part of Kenyan elections, though international observers say they believe an improved electoral system will make wide-spread cheating harder this time. Many Odinga supporters believe that President Mwai Kibaki stole the vote from Odinga in 2007, a belief that propelled the violence.

Kenyatta and his running mate ? William Ruto ? both face charges at the International Criminal Court over allegations they orchestrated the 2007-08 violence. If Kenyatta wins, he may be forced to spend much of presidency before The Hague-based court.

Low-level fraud was evident Saturday, when a man approached an Associated Press reporter at Kenyatta's rally and asked if the reporter wanted to buy a voter registration card for about $12. The man gave his name as Calvin Juma Hongo and said: "Why should I waste my time voting for these guys? They don't care about me. All I am thinking about now is how to look after my pregnant wife."

The Kenyatta rally ? with thousands of people clad in red ? reached a peak frenzy as two helicopters circled the downtown park as Kenyatta was arriving. Kenyatta accused Odinga of taking success for granted, and he told his crowd he believes he can win in the first round. Ruto, in a reference to the newspaper interview, said no voter should be intimidated.

Julius Waweru, a 25-year-old studying to become an electrician, wore multiple Kenyatta hats. He said: "I support Uhuru Kenyatta because he is young, and we need to change this government for a younger generation."

Just down Nairobi's main street, perhaps 3 kilometers (2 miles) away, tens of thousands of supporters for Odinga filled a sports stadium. Supporters held a dozen or so American flags aloft. Odinga and President Barack Obama's father come from the same tribe.

Nicholas Owino, 56, a resident of Nairobi's Korogocho slum, wore a hat made of dozens of oranges, the color of Odinga's party.

"My life is not good and I have not benefited from my support of Odinga since 2004 but I am confident if he becomes president my children will benefit," said Owino, who said he lost his grocery store during rioting of the 2007-08 violence and has not yet recovered it. More than 600,000 people were forced from their homes during the violence.

Odinga told the stadium crowd that Kenya has stagnated the last 50 years because the status quo has remained in power. "This can only change by voting in the forces of change," Odinga said.

He also appeared to attack Kenyatta, saying that the son of a snake is a snake. "It's time we end dictatorship, impunity and land grabbing," he said. Kenyatta is the son of Kenya's first president.

Monday's vote is the most important and complicated in the country's 50-year history. Despite efforts to promote peace, there are many reasons why the vote could turn tumultuous.

The Somalia militant group al-Shabab may try to attack voters or disrupt the vote; a secessionist group on Kenya's coast has threatened violence; new political divisions known as counties will see 47 new races for governor, creating sources of new friction; and tensions are high in some regions between Odinga's tribe ? the Luo ? and Kenyatta's tribe ? the Kikuyu.

Odinga or Kenyatta must win at least 50 percent of the vote in order to win the election Monday. There are eight presidential candidates, so it's likely the two will face each other in a run-off in April, a situation that analysts believe will raise tensions because of the increased focus on the two men.

(AP) ? Baseball players' union head Michael Weiner says toughening penalties for drug violations will have to wait until the 2014 season.

"There are going to be talks. I don't what the result is going to be," he said Sunday after meeting with the Baltimore Orioles as part of his tour of the 30 spring training camps.

The current sanctions have been in place since the 2006 season: 50 games for a first offense, 100 for a second and a lifetime ban for a third. Selig held a news conference Saturday and said he wanted increased penalties as soon as possible.

"Starting this offseason, we had substantial discussion among player leadership about whether the penalty structure we have is right ? whether there should be increases ? whether there should be a differential penalty for intentional or unintentional users," Weiner said.

"That dialogue is continuing. We had some dialogue even with the commissioner's office in the offseason that didn't lead to any changes, and I suspect that we'll have those discussions over the course of the year," he said. "But it's going to be a 2014 issue. We're not going to change the rules of the game in the middle of the season. In a sense, the drug-testing season started with spring training."

The safer sex? For a little-known primate, a new understanding of why females outlive males

The safer sex? For a little-known primate, a new understanding of why females outlive males

Friday, March 1, 2013

Researchers studying aging in an endangered lemur known as the Milne-Edwards' sifaka report that in old age, females are the safer sex.

After observing these animals for more than two decades in the wild in Madagascar, co-author Patricia Wright of Stony Brook University had a hunch that females were living longer than their male counterparts.

Females tend to outlive males in many animals, including humans. But in the Milne-Edwards' sifaka ? a rainforest-dweller with orange-red eyes, a black face and woolly dark brown fur ? the sexes didn't seem to differ in any of the ways thought to give females a survival advantage in other animals.

Sex differences in aggression, hormones, or appearance drive males of many species to an earlier grave. But in the Milne-Edwards' sifaka, males and females have similar levels of testosterone, and are equally likely to pick fights.

Both sexes occasionally stray from the safety of their social groups, explained lead author Stacey Tecot of the University of Arizona. They also grow at similar rates and reach roughly the same size, have similar coloration, and are equally likely to be spotted by predators.

For the study, Tecot, Wright and colleagues analyzed detailed records of births, deaths, and dispersal behavior for more than 70 individual lemurs living in Ranomafana National Park in southeastern Madagascar ? a data set spanning 23 years from 1986 to 2009.

According to the data, most males died by their late teens. But females lived, on average, into their early 30s.

What could explain the gender gap? By taking a closer look at dispersal behavior across the lifespan, the researchers think they have a clue.

In Milne-Edwards' sifaka society, both sexes are known to leave the groups where they were born in search of a new group to call their own ? sometimes dispersing repeatedly throughout their lives.

The data suggest that on average, males and females disperse equally frequently, and wander just as far. But when the researchers broke down dispersal across the lifespan, from infancy to old age, they found that males and females differed in their timing.

The differences didn't start to emerge until later in life. Females generally stopped dispersing after a certain age, typically when they reached 11 years old. But males continued to roam their entire lives.

Researchers don't know why females eventually settle down, whereas males continue to strike off on their own to find new groups. But dispersing at older ages could carry greater costs, especially if older animals aren't as agile or quick to heal from injury.

"When you're a social animal and you go off on your own into unfamiliar territory, finding food can be more of a challenge. Plus you don't have the extra protection of other group members who can help look out for predators. Even when you find a new group to join, you may have to fight your way in and there's a chance of getting injured in a fight," said co-author Jennifer Verdolin of the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in Durham, North Carolina.

The study doesn't help explain why women tend to outlive men in humans, the authors caution. But it does suggest that fine-scale studies of risk-taking behavior at different ages could reveal age-specific mortality risk factors that researchers hadn't considered.

15 weapons taken from shop on 'American Guns' show

WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. (AP) ? Police in suburban Denver say 12 handguns and three rifles were taken from the gun shop featured on Discovery Channel's "American Guns."

Wheat Ridge police had said earlier this week that they didn't have an immediate tally of what was taken during a break-in at the Gunsmoke Gun Shop early Wednesday. They said Friday that no assault weapons were stolen.

Police were alerted to the break-in by a silent alarm and found a burglar or burglars had entered the shop through a hole in the roof.

A witness across the street reported seeing a silver two-door car leaving the gun shop's parking lot, but investigators say they need more help from the public to solve the case.
