Sentencing in trial over gas exports to Israel postponed until March 25

Egypt's former Minister of Petroleum, Sameh Fahmy.On Monday, the Court of Cessation in Cairo decided to put the appeal submitted by Egypt's former Minister of Petroleum, Sameh Fahmy, on hold until March 25. Fahmy had been sentenced to 15 years in prison and dismissed from his post for exporting gas to Israel.

Cairo's Criminal Court, headed by Justice Bashir Abdel Aal, handed down Fahmi's sentence alongside that of businessman, Hussein Salem, who was also given a 15 year sentence in absentia. The other accused heads of the Ministry of Petroleum were given sentences that ranged from three to seven years, were fined $2,003,319,075 and compelled to return $499,862,998 in charges for exporting gas to Israel at a price below the world price.
