Video: Obama looks to compromise with the GOP

>>> we are followingll breaking news on capitol hill . the nomination for cia director is in his second hour and said he will continue until he can no longer speak. also happening in washington, d.c., just over four hours. president obama will be having dinner with 11 republican senators. it is a move our first read team said they show the president is going around the republican leadership to build relationship to get things passed. nbc news confirmed the dinner will be at a d.c. area hotel and will include john mccain , lindsey graham and others. the president will go have lunch with mitch mcconnell .

>> i expect the president to members. i wish he had done more than that over the years. all of us very limited interaction with the president and he is certainly doesn't have to go through me to recall my members.

>> democratic congresswoman maxine waters from california, the top-ranking democrat. thank you for your time. i top the get your reaction to rand paul and the filibuster we are watching play out there.

>> obstructionists. i know that this kind of trying to stop the president from having the people that he would like to carry out the various jobs and these agencies is absolutely li dickulous. this director is very much needed. for him to commit himself to filibustering for as long as it takes is a kind of destructive action that needs to stop in the congress of the united states of america .

>> moving forward to the president having dinner tonight, weather permitting as we understand, what do you make of the perception that perhaps the president feels he needs to go around republican leadership and talk with the rank and file or maybe key members of the republican party to get things done. not just on the budget issues, but guns and immigration and so on.

>> you are absolutely right. the president has big issues on his plate. guns, the immigration issue and these issues must be moved forward. we must get into the debate and solve them. he has do what he has to do. in talking with members that he can get to listen to him and perhaps reason with him is an important step in the development of getting to the solutions that we need. i applaud him for inviting them to the white house and having dinner and being able to talk with them. he is doing everything he possibly can to get these issues resolved. to move this country forward. that's what a leader does.

>> we got word, paul ryan according to luke russert told reporters he recently spoke to president obama via phone providing another example of the outreach that is happening over the last few days. do you believe that same outreach is happening with democrats that you have with congressman keith ellison of minnesota. he is concerned there will be cuts to social security and revisions to met care ha he would not support and he said he is willing to fight the president tooth and nail on any changes to entitlement programs . do you believe the president has reached out to more progressive members regarding change sms.

>> i think he is going to have to confront the real understanding that there some of us who are absolutely committed to saving medicare as we know it and social security and that we will have to fight for it. our constituents center on the issues. the public is with us. the polls show that the public strongly supports that we take care of and save medicaid, medicare, and social security . these issues are very important to us. yes, the president will have to deal with us on that, but that's how the process goes.

>> what consessions are you willing to make with entitlement programs . the president said it's on the table.

>> the concessions i'm willing to make have to do with closing loopholes. the rich have to be lope holes. we have to pull back on the loopholes they have in the tax law . we have big oil that has lots of subsidies and companies that are exporting jobs offshore and the cheap labor. they are benefiting from that and not paying their fair share . when we deal with all of that, we can have the money that we need to take care of the safety net programs and the so-called entitlement programs . that's how we are going to have to deal with this and talk about this. we are not willing to allow the rich to continue to have these loopholes and not pay their fair share of taxes. we want the buffett rule. you pay as much as his secretary.

>> thank you so much for joining us. reacting to the developing news and the ongoing news later with the president's big dinner. thank you, ma'am.
