Business Ethics

1. The first thing you should do is find out if Matt was talking to the competitor prior to leaving....and regardless of that move to step two.

2. Take Matt, and the competitor to court, for espionage. If you have proof, great....if not, that's okay too, you just tie up Matt's (and the competitor's) hands as the litigation makes its way through the court system.

3. You offer Susan the job and hope she takes it....if not find someone else.

4. You go with Susan (or the new person) to see Joe. Explain to Joe what has happened and keep him positive about going forward with Susan/new person.

5. If Joe seems convinced/unconvinced it doesn't matter, offer him a 5% to 10% break on his costs of doing business with your company. If he asks why you can do this now, and not before, explain that Matt, with his experience with the company, made more money....now that he has gone, those extra costs are gone with him.

6. And this point is the most important, go out, knock on doors, and get another company like Joe's. Don't keep all your eggs in one basket like that.
