YOUTH SPORTS CALENDAR

Houston Swim Club tryouts: The Houston Swim Club, 8307 Augustine, is holding tryouts for girls and boys ages 6 and older.

Houston Racquet Club Swim Team: The Houston Racquet Club Swim Team participates in the Country Club League which includes the Houston Country Club, The Houstonian, River Oaks, Lakeside, The Forest Club, Briar Club, and The Houston Racquet Club. The Racquet Club has 164 swimmers, and members are ages 5-14. The best swimmers from each team in the league are invited to the Country Club Invitational held annually at the University of Houston Natatorium. The assistant coaches hail from several Houston schools including Strake Jesuit, Duchesne Academy, St. Thomas, Memorial, and Lamar High School. Jackie Busa is the head coach for the Racquet Club.

Dad?s Club aquatics: Dad?s Club, 1006 Voss, holds before- and after-school swim lessons, swim team, water aerobics, masters swim training, lifeguard training and CPR instruction. For information, call 713-461-8577 or e-mail dadsclub@dadsclubswimteam.com.

Hardball Academy Thanksgiving tournament: Hardball Academy baseball/softball clinic will hold its annual Thanksgiving clinic featuring instruction in hitting, fielding and throwing Nov. 23-24 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Register online at hardballacademy.com or by emailing info@hardballacademy.com.

Hardball: Hardball Academy will hold a baseball/softball clinic, focusing on hitting, fielding, throwing and more Nov. 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WULL signups: The West University Little League is registering for its Spring 2010 season. Registration is open through Dec. 31, and is open to all boys and girls who are age 5 on or before April 30, 2010 who live within West University Little League boundaries. View the boundary map at www.westull.org. Early registration is highly encouraged.

Bellaire winter hoops: The City of Bellaire will hold a winter basketball league for players age 16-18 (as of Feb. 27, 2010). Registration is held at the Bellaire Recreation Center, 5125 Laurel St. A team that contains four residents or more costs $400, while others cost $425. All games will be held at the Bellaire Rec Center and the Jewish Community Center, 5607 South Braeswood. Any player who is on a varsity roster or playing on a varsity school team is ineligible. Houston Warriors Holiday Basketball Camp: The Houston Warriors Holiday Basketball Camp will be held Dec. 21-23 from 8:30 a.m.-noon hosted by coach Tommy Gates at Holy Spirit Episcopal School, 12535 Perthshire Road in Houston, 77024. Herndon hoops camps: Coach John Herndon will host a players? clinic from 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. for boys ages 5-8 and 12:30-1:45 p.m. for all girls, as well as a clinic from 2-3:30 p.m. for boys ages 9 and up. The teaching will be headlined by Herndon with former Rice Owls and area coaches as instructors. Herndon coached for 10 years at the college level (Rice, North Dakota State, Washington and Lee University). He is currently a private basketball consultant who works with youth, high school, college and professional players providing instruction in the United States and abroad, and is best-known to the Houston community as ?CH?, the director of the popular Rice Owl basketball camps. Coaches are encouraged to attend, observe and assist during their age-level session. Players should bring a ball to their session. Basketball: The Trotter Family YMCA, 1331 Augusta Dr., will hold registration for its winter basketball league through Nov. 15. The league is open to children ages 4-17.

Youth Basketball: Quillian winter youth basketball for children ages 8-12 has begun registration. Cost ranges from $65-100. Evaluations will be Nov. 21 with the first game Jan. 2.

Big Monday hoops clinics: Bellaire?s Big Monday After-School Basketball Skills Clinics will be Mondays through Nov. 30, from 4-5:15 p.m. The clinics are for boys and girls in grades 1-6, and all levels are welcome. The lead clinician is John Herndon, who has coached at all three levels of NCAA competition including Rice University and authored numerous instructional manuals and videos. All clinics will be held at Bellaire Recreation Center, 5125 Laurel in Bellaire.

Basketball Skills sessions: Hybrid Sports Academy will be holding basketball skills sessions for boys and girls ages 8-13 to prepare for Hybrid Hoops upcoming tryouts. These sessions will focus on three key principles: skill development, speed and agility. The sessions will be on Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 7-8:30 p.m. at Exley Elementary in Katy ISD. The sessions will be free to attend but pre registration is required. Sunday sessions will focus primarily on game play to reinforce what was taught during the Tuesday and Wednesday sessions. The Sunday sessions will cost $10 per player to attend to pay for gym costs. It is recommended that those that are thinking about attending the Hybrid Hoops tryouts in November attend each of these sessions to increase their skill level. Team Swagger hoops: Team Swagger Basketball Club, home of the No. 2-ranked AAU 11U D2 team in the country, will host tryouts Nov. 15 to complete 2009-2010 AAU rosters. Boys ages 8U/second grade through 13U/seventh grade are welcome to try out. Call 281-701-8212

Aztec gym: Aztec Empire Boxing Gym, 742 Telephone Road, one block from Austin High School, accepts boys, girls, men and women from age 5 through adult. Classes are available. Hours are 5-9 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment Saturday and Sunday.Cost is $45 per month; there are no registration fees.

Cheerleading: The Trotter Family YMCA, 1331 Augusta Dr., will hold registration for its winter cheerleading program through Nov.15. The program is open to ages 5-11.

Winter youth football tournament: The Galveston County HEAT Winter Youth Football Invitational Tournament will be held Dec. 11-13 at for ages 7-14. There are no weight limits, and the tournament is double elimination. NCAA rules will be observed and team trophies will be given to teams finishing in first place through consolation. Teams from all over Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas will be in attendance. Groups include ages 7-8 (Grades 1-2), 9-10 (grades 3-4), 11-12 (grades 5-6) and 13-14 (grades 7-8). Cost is $300 and entry fee includes insurance for all participants.

Bellaire classes: Monthly youth golf classes are offered by the Bellaire Parks and Recreation Department. Sessions cover grip, stroke, stance, putting and more. Call Buster Adams at 713-662-8285 for details.

T-Rex Lax: Texas Recreational Lacrosse League is gearing up to start another season. Join the coaching staff on seven Sundays (Nov. 15, 22; Dec. 6, 13; Jan. 10, 17, 24) from 2-4 p.m. to build confidence and competence in lacrosse. Sessions will be at St. John?s School for boys in grades K-8 and girls in grades 3-8. There is a fee involved. This is not a school selective league. Full equipment is required. Soccer: The Trotter Family YMCA, 1331 Augusta Dr., will hold registration for its winter soccer league through Nov. 15. The league is open to children ages 3-5. Practices are once a week and games are on Saturdays.

Southwest Indoor Soccer: Year-round indoor league play for men, women?s and coed teams in southwest Houston/Stafford. Youth leagues available too. Games are weeknights and weekends. Near Town Soccer registration: Registration is open for youth soccer players interested in playing for the Houston Near Town Soccer Club, which includes recreational West University Soccer and Houston Express Soccer. The Club expects to field approximately 1,800 players on more than 175 teams for the 2008 fall season. Comprehensive programs are available for boys and girls ages 5-18 regardless of experience or playing level, from beginners and recreational players through Division I.

Homeschooler soccer: Kicks Indoor Soccer & Gym, 611 Shepherd Drive, offers a soccer program dedicated to homeschooled youth ages 2-17 every Wednesday. Large family and group discounts are available.

KiCKS KiDS soccer training: Kicks Indoor Soccer offers year-round training for children ages 2-17. Children can walk in for a single class or sign up for any program and start at any time. Every class is age-appropriate, managed by licensed soccer trainers. The full KiCKS KiDS schedule is Mondays from 4-5 p.m. for ages 2-4; Mondays from 5-6 p.m. for ages 7-11; Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m. for ages 12-17; Thursdays from 5-6 p.m. for ages 4-6; and Fridays from 9:30-10:30 a.m for ages 2-4. On Mommy & Me Fridays, there is open play on the indoor turf field with other parents and their young ones every Friday afternoon from 4-5:30 p.m. for $5 per child. Finally, there is Friday night open play for adult coed competition from 11 p.m.-1 a.m. for $10 per player.

Pole vault mini-clinics: Technical and safety instruction for pole vaulters of all ages is offered at 6 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays at Rice University track, University Boulevard at Main Street. Instructor is coach David Butler, pole vault coach at Rice and and a member of the development staff for U.S.A. National Pole Vault. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $30 per session.
