Shelf Road Limestone Cliffs Draws Rock Climbers From Around The ...

World class rock climbing surrounds Ca?on City, and makes Fremont County a popular destination for climbers from all around the world.

We took a trip out to Shelf Road climbing area, located north of Ca?on City. The exposed limestone cliffs offer over 1,000 sport and trad climbing routes that have been developed by devoted climbers over the past 30 years.

Sport routes are equipped with bolts in the rock that climbers attach their protection to, referred to as quickdraws. They then clip into the draws with ropes. A trad, or traditional route, involves placing protective gear in cracks and crevices whilst making your way up the wall.

Making their way up the cliff faces in precise and determined motions, climbers reach heights of close to one hundred feet in the air.

Local climbers have learned to plan their trips to Shelf Road during the weekdays, as weekends draw large numbers of climbers from Denver, Summit county, and around the world. Most weekends as you walk the trails you are sure to hear French and German spoken by fellow climbers shouting encouragement to their partners.

There are also popular climbing areas along the Arkansas River near Cotopaxi, and south of Florence in the Wet Mountains.

Stay tuned as we will be exploring these areas and bring you some more great video footage of this exciting and exhilarating outdoor activity.
