GOP Delegates will nominate Mitt Romney for president on Monday in a break with tradition.?

The nominating vote will come on the first day of the Republican National Convention according to a schedule released earlier in the week. The vote is traditionally held a day before the nominee accepts the nomination.?

Mitt Romney will still give his acceptance speech on Thursday. That speech will be broadcast live by the major TV networks, but Monday's events, which also include a speech by Ann Romney, will not be.

There are a number of reasons why Republicans might want to lock in Romney's formal nomination early in the week. Hurricane Isaac remains a concern. And many supporters of Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), who has not officially dropped out of the GOP presidential race, will be in town for Paul's rally on Sunday. Paul has denied he has plans to disrupt the convention and has warned his supporters against it, but a report in the New York?Times on Friday indicated Republican officials are concerned there will be interruptions during the vote.

Romney has secured enough delegates to clinch the nomination, although Paul won a majority in three states.

President Obama will formally accept the Democratic nomination the following Thursday, the last day of the Democratic National Convention, at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.
