Possible Travel Insurance Requirement for Russian Citizens ...

Russia?s Finance Ministry has proposed a travel insurance requirement for citizens traveling abroad. The ministry has been in a deadlock for the past few months due to disagreements on necessary coverage minimums. On Tuesday, the Finance Ministry announced a proposed minimum of 1 million rubles, which is approximately $31,000 USD.

The proposed minimum was calculated based on average policies taken out by travelers, as well as legislation in other countries. Nations in the Schengen region, for example, are required to have 30,000 euros of medical insurance in order to obtain a visa.

The goal of the insurance requirement is to ensure that citizens have adequate emergency medical and medical evacuation coverage in the event they fall sick or injured. Recently, a Canadian woman, Anna Leibenko, suffered a fall in Croatia which put her in a coma. Because she had not purchased emergency medical or evacuation insurance, she remains in Croatia while her family works to raise funds to bring her home.

The cost of coverage would be compulsorily rolled into the travel costs.
