Yale Bids Farewell to a Complicated President

Yale's resigning president won't be remembered for inspiring students or taking bold moral stances. His risk-taking was of an altogether less glamorous sort.

levin-wide.jpg Richard Levin (right) presents visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao with a portrait of the first-ever Chinese Yale student in 2006. (Reuters)

As an undergraduate at Yale, I was always jealous of other universities' presidents. Harvard had its first female president, Drew Gilpin Faust, with her bestselling Civil War books and her magnificent name; Princeton had the molecular biologist Shirley Tilghman, also its first woman leader; Brown had Ruth Simmons, beloved by students in addition to being the Ivy League's first black president.

Meanwhile, we had Richard Levin, a soft-voiced, dough-faced economist remarkable for his blandness. He was both white and male, in that way resembling every other Yale president (save for Hanna Gray, who served a year-long stint as Yale's acting president in the 1970s before moving to the University of Chicago, where she became the first official female president of a major American university).

As an idealistic undergrad whose experience of Yale was confined to my liberal arts classes and the student magazine I edited, I was skeptical of (and, admittedly, bored by) Levin. Following his forgettable convocation speech my freshman year, I was at first only aware of him via his efforts to fortify the university's global brand. He brought Chinese President Hu Jintao to speak on campus, which I remember chiefly for the angry mobs of protestors who blocked my dorm. He announced plans to increase Yale's enrollment by 15 percent and to build two new residential colleges to absorb the overflow--a decision criticized by many students and alumni as commercially motivated. Levin was a corporate shadow, irrelevant to daily life in my tiny campus subculture yet ever present in his representation of Yale as the financially sophisticated global institution we often forgot it was.

Beginning in my junior year, though, general indifference to Levin turned, among certain groups of students, to active hostility. Levin became a frequent target of frustration--for his rumored sensitivity to negative publicity, for his reliance on a never-ending stream of committees and reports and other mainstays of academic bureaucracy to respond to controversy, and most of all for his seeming indifference to what felt, to many students on campus--and, as time went on, to me--like institutionally tolerated misogyny.

The turning point for many students was his handling of a now notorious incident. In January of 2008, a group of fraternity pledges circulated a photo of themselves posing outside the Yale Women's Center, flashing gang symbols and brandishing a sign that read, "We love Yale sluts." Student activists lobbied the administration to censure the fraternity, but Yale's response was slow and typically opaque, resulting in little more than few new committees to review Yale's sexual misconduct policies.

I wrote my senior thesis placing this incident and its administrative aftermath in the context of Yale's legal history with sexual harassment. I spoke to students who had been victims of harassment and assault while at Yale--both my peers and women who'd been students in the 1970s and '80s, soon after the university began admitting women. Though the way Yale talked about sexual harassment and the mechanisms it had in place to address it had improved, both the current students and the older alumni articulated a similar point: They felt that Yale had silenced or minimized their complaints in order to protect the institution's reputation.

A year after I graduated, pledges from another Yale fraternity were filmed marching around the freshman quad chanting, "No means yes, yes means anal." When the administration managed to drag its feet responding to that incident as well, a group of students and recent alumni filed a legal complaint with the Department of Education, alleging that Yale's lackluster policies on sexual harassment and assault amounted to a violation of Title IX. Yale had been privately working on various reforms for years, but the national scrutiny brought on by a federal investigation sped up its implementation timeline.

The investigation was concluded earlier this year without any finding of wrongdoing, and Yale has revamped its policies in ways that I believe are a big step forward. But I remain disappointed by the fact that Levin didn't use the national media coverage of Yale's problematic sexual culture as an opportunity to lead a conversation about sex and gender--to make Yale a national leader in implementing a forward-thinking approach to sex on campus.

Three years removed from my self-congratulatory identity as a campus muckraker, I began to cobble together a new picture of the man I had alternately ignored or resented: a loyal Yale soldier whose flat persona--the very quality that apparently worried the presidential search committee that eventually settled on him--also made him one of Yale's most effective leaders and, in many people's eyes, the university's greatest.

Levin may have assiduously avoided scandal, but he was also an unlikely risk-taker. Expanding Yale's enrollment (a move that is still several years and $300 million away from implementation) was a hugely controversial decision, but also one that acknowledged the financial realities the university faced. Four years into the recession, when many Ivy League endowments have sputtered, Yale's is the second largest in the country, having grown from $3 billion to more than $19 billion during Levin's 19-year tenure. Arguably Levin's biggest risk was partnering with the National University of Singapore, a move that was protested by faculty and students as implicitly condoning Singapore's autocratic regime.

As university presidents go, Levin was far from a charismatic or inspiring leader. He chose to outsource this form of leadership to lower-level administrators, who interact closely with students through Yale's residential college system. He focused instead on the less glamorous side of contemporary academia: leveraging a school's brand to appeal to global audiences and to attract new revenue sources. He did an irrefutably successful job with this, leaving Yale a far more globally established and financially stable institution than it was when he assumed office.

As a student, I craved moral and intellectual direction from my school's president--if not through a revolutionary reform agenda, then at least through example. I knew little of where Drew Faust and Ruth Simmons were leading their schools, but I assumed it was farther forward than wherever Rick Levin was leading us. Now, though, I recognize that Levin's leadership was bold and brave in its own way. He led Yale in a direction that I'm still not entirely sure I'm comfortable with (and, for what it's worth, that many of my college friends also harbor mixed feelings about) but there's no denying that he led it there with persistence, clarity of vision, and great competence.

Ancient Denisovan genome: Relationships between Denisovans and present-day humans revealed

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Max Planck researchers have described the Denisovan genome, illuminating the relationships between Denisovans and present-day humans.

The analyses of an international team of researchers led by Svante P??bo of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, show that the genetic variation of Denisovans was extremely low, suggesting that although they were present in large parts of Asia, their population was never large for long periods of time. In addition, a comprehensive list documents the genetic changes that set apart modern humans from their archaic relatives. Some of these changes concern genes that are associated with brain function or nervous system development.

In 2010 Svante P??bo and his colleagues sequenced DNA that they isolated from a finger bone fragment discovered in the Denisova Cave in southern Siberia. They found that it belonged to a young girl of a previously unknown group of archaic humans that they called "Denisovans." Thanks to a novel technique which splits the DNA double helix so that each of its two strands can be used for sequencing, the team was able to sequence every position in the Denisovan genome about 30 times over. The thus generated genome sequence shows a quality similar to genomes that have been determined from present-day humans.

In a new study, which is published in this week's issue of the journal Science, Svante P??bo and his colleagues compare the Denisovan genome with those of the Neandertals and eleven modern humans from around the world. Their findings confirm a previous study according to which modern populations from the islands of southeastern Asia share genes with the Denisovans. In addition, the genomes of people from East Asia, and South America include slightly more genes from Neandertals than those of people in Europe: "The excess archaic material in East Asia is more closely related to Neandertals than to Denisovans, so we estimate that the proportion of Neandertal ancestry in Europe is lower than in eastern Asia," the Leipzig researchers report.

"This is an extinct genome sequence of unprecedented accuracy," says Matthias Meyer, the lead author of the study. "For most of the genome we can even determine the differences between the two sets of chromosomes that the Deniosovan girl inherited from her mother and father." From this the researchers can tell that genetic variation of the Denisovans was lower than in present-day humans. This is likely due to that an initially small Denisovan population that grew quickly while spreading over a wide geographic range. "If future research of the Neandertal genome shows that their population size changed over time in similar ways, it may well be that a single population expanding out of Africa gave rise to both the Denisovans and the Neandertals," says Svante P??bo, who led the study.

The researchers furthermore generated a list of about 100,000 recent changes in the human genome that occurred after the split from the Denisovans. Some of these changes affect genes that are associated with brain function and nervous system development. Others possibly affect the skin, the eye and dental morphology. "This research will help determining how it was that modern human populations came to expand dramatically in size as well as cultural complexity while archaic humans eventually dwindled in numbers and became physically extinct," says Svante P??bo.

Earlier this year, the Leipzig researchers had already made the entire Denisovan genome sequence available to the broader public by publishing it online.

Onward to Romney's big night, a speech to millions

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Mitt Romney is stepping up for the most important speech of his Republican presidential campaign, to an audience of millions, after a rousing warm-up from a running mate who vowed the days of dodging painful budget choices will end if voters toss President Barack Obama from office.

Having grasped the nomination on his second try, after years spent cultivating this moment, Romney will use his speech Thursday night to introduce himself to a large portion of voters and claw for advantage in a race that could scarcely be any closer. As part of that introduction, Romney appeared prepared to discuss his Mormon faith in more direct terms than usual, a direction signaled by running mate Paul Ryan on Wednesday night in several allusions to the duo's differing religions but "same moral creed."

The Wisconsin congressman, a deficit hawk who's become the party's darling since joining the ticket, offered a prime-time testimonial setting up Romney's turn on the stage in the Republican National Convention's finale. If history is a guide, viewership of Romney's speech ? and Obama's address to his Democratic convention next week ? will be surpassed only by the audience for their coming debates.

The Republican convention's most rah-rah moments were unfolding as Hurricane Isaac, down to a tropical storm, inflicted floodwaters and misery in rural stretches of nearby Gulf states. The slowly unfolding calamity went unmentioned by most key speakers Wednesday night, although a few asked for Red Cross donations to the victims and offered prayers. The GOP had cut the convention's opening day in fear Isaac would strike Tampa, which was spared.

Not that Obama set politicking aside, either, even as he tended to emergency management. Locked in an unpredictable race that shows no clear advantage for either man, Obama implored young people in a crowd of 7,500 in Charlottesville, Va., home to the University of Virginia, to register, vote and make sure their friends do as well. "I need you," he said. "America needs you to close the gap between what is and what might be."

Ryan, 42, came on board the campaign for the White House with a reputation in Washington for taking on the sacred cows in government spending, Medicare prime among them, and he's generated plenty of excitement among conservatives who have never been fully convinced that Romney is one of them. "I think he's a rock star for the Republicans," Allie Burgin, a delegate from Wynnewood, Okla., said before the speech. And that's how he was received on the stage.

"The present administration has made its choices," Ryan said, "and Mitt Romney and I have made ours. Before the math and the momentum overwhelm us all, we are going to solve this nation's economic problems. And I'm going to level with you: We don't have much time."

He was particularly cutting in his indictment of the president, even in a convention loaded with anti-Obama rhetoric. "Fear and division are all they've got left," he said. "It all started off with stirring speeches, Greek columns, the thrill of something new. Now all that's left is a presidency adrift, surviving on slogans that already seem tired, grasping at a moment that has already passed."

Ryan misrepresented Obama's record at times ? and seemed to forget his own.

He said sharply that "the biggest, coldest power play of all in Obamacare came at the expense of the elderly. ... So they just took it all away from Medicare. Seven hundred and sixteen billion dollars, funneled out of Medicare by President Obama."

In fact, Ryan himself incorporated the same cuts into budgets he steered through the House in the past two years as chairman of its Budget Committee, using the money for deficit reduction. The cuts do not affect Medicare recipients directly, but rather reduce payments to hospitals, health insurance plans and other service providers.

Moreover, Ryan's own plan to remake Medicare would squeeze the program's spending even more than the changes Obama made.

Ryan promised, "We will not duck the tough issues; we will lead." But Romney has yet to flesh out those fiscal choices.

He's promised big increases in military spending and the restoration of more than $700 billion in Medicare cuts, along with lower taxes, without detailing how he would make good on his pledge to cut $500 billion a year from the federal budget. That goal is only realistic if budget cutters dive into the massive entitlements of Social Security and Medicare and if Congress can be persuaded to slice deeply into areas of spending such as health research, transportation, homeland security and aid to the poor.

In a letter sent Thursday morning to potential Democratic donors, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said the Ryan speech "represents a huge bet by the Romney campaign ? they've decided that facts, truth and reality will not be a brake on their campaign message."

In remarks to the American Legion in Indianapolis, Romney reaffirmed his intention to expand the armed forces and roll back "reckless defense cuts" that will begin automatically in January if Congress does not act to stop them. "There are plenty of places to cut in a federal budget that now totals over $3 trillion, but defense is not one of them," he said. Left unstated was that his running mate voted to approve the legislation that authorized those cuts alongside reductions in domestic spending.

Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said days earlier that the nominee would discuss his Mormon religion in his convention address as part of "what's informed his values." Ryan, a Roman Catholic, took up the matter conspicuously, and no doubt as part of the convention's carefully crafted message.

"Mitt and I also go to different churches," he said. "But in any church, the best kind of preaching is done by example. And I've been watching that example. The man who will accept your nomination tomorrow is prayerful and faithful and honorable. Not only a defender of marriage, he offers an example of marriage at its best. Not only a fine businessman, he's a fine man, worthy of leading this optimistic and good-hearted country."

And again: "Our different faiths come together in the same moral creed. We believe that in every life there is goodness; for every person, there is hope. Each one of us was made for a reason, bearing the image and likeness of the Lord of Life."

Former pastor Mike Huckabee, in his speech earlier, also delved into the subject, saying, "I care far less as to where Mitt Romney takes his family to church than I do about where he takes this country."

Delegates cheered a parade of party leaders past, present and ? possibly ? future.

Arizona Sen. John McCain, the man who defeated Romney for the 2008 nomination only to lose the election to Obama, spoke on his 76th birthday and said he wished he'd been there under different circumstances. And an array of ambitious younger elected officials, Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and John Thune of South Dakota among them, preceded Ryan to the podium.

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice praised the Republican ticket in a speech that made no overt mention of Obama. "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan will rebuild us at home and inspire us to lead abroad. They will provide an answer to the question, 'Where does America stand?'"

PFT: Dolphins' plane clips another in Dallas

tom-brady-1Getty Images

With less than a week to go until the ball flies end over end through the New Jersey twilight (unless the team tries to make the replacement officials? heads implode by attempting an onside kick), the NFL has announced that new rules will apply in 2012 for the trade deadline and injured reserve.

The easy part relates to the trade deadline.? It has been moved from October 16 to October 30.? So instead of the Tuesday after Week Six, trades must happen by 4:00 p.m. ET on the Tuesday after Week Eight.

The injured reserve rule allows one player per team to be activated from IR after a ?major injury.?? The player must miss at least six weeks of practice.? He may be placed on the active list at least eight weeks after placement on injured reserve.

Unlike the PUP list, then, the window for returning to practice or returning to action doesn?t close.? Once it?s open, it stays open.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft has said that, if such a provision had been in place four years ago, the team possibly would have used the designation for quarterback Tom Brady, who tore an ACL in Week One.

Here?s where it gets complicated.? Because teams already have cut to 75, a special procedure applies for 2012.? As to teams that already have placed players on IR, the player for whom the short-term IR procedure will be used must be placed back on the active roster by 9:00 p.m. ET, August 31.? He?ll then count as one of the final 53.

Then, after 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 4, each team can place one player on the modified IR list.

This means that teams hoping to use the new IR rule for a player already on injured reserve will have to displace another player for nearly four days, using a roster spot for the injured player and then creating a roster spot next Tuesday, when that player goes back to IR.

Confused?? Good.? Because it took me an hour to figure it out.

It will take far less than an hour for you to check out a slice of PFT Live regarding the looming roster reductions, along with admittedly rank speculation about a couple of possible surprise moves.

Sources claim Sharp's production of iPhone screen delayed

Not even a full moon cycle has passed since Sharp's president, Takashi Okuda, trumpeted the fact that his firm was one of the chosen few selected to provide screens for the new iPhone. Now, according to Reuters the troubled company has slipped behind on production, with The Wall Street Journal going as far to say mass production hasn't started at all. The nearest thing to a reason given for the situation is "manufacturing difficulties." If you were worried this might delay the reveal of Apple's next flagship, the WSJ also reminds us that Sharp is still one of three suppliers, though it's unclear just how big a slice of the production-pie Okuda's brigade has been given. At the very least, those one the production line can likely enjoy some much appreciated over time.

Digital Storm's Budget Gaming PC Doesn't Sacrifice Power for a ...

Digital Storm's Budget Gaming PC Doesn't Sacrifice Power for a Reasonable PriceDigital Storm is a boutique gaming PC maker that I've traditionally associated with putting together mind-blowing systems that cost more than the vehicle I drive. So when they announced a new line of affordable gaming rigs starting at only $799, I was taken aback. What could the company that's built the "world's most advanced PC" create at such a low price point?

How about a gaming PC that gets the job done?

When Digital Storm first approached me about the possibility of reviewing one of their systems they gave me a choice. I could either test out the top-of-the-line Aventum, the $3,000 - $8,000 machine with its custom-engineered case that defies the laws of temporal physics; or I could test the Marauder, a no-nonsense, low-frills PC that starts at $799 and ends under $1,500. Knowing that the average Kotaku reader is a borderline homeless person using their second-hand PSP to access free internet in the parking lot at Starbucks, I decided to go cheap.

Then Digital Storm asked me which of the Marauder's four levels I'd like to try out. I chose the most expensive, which makes total sense.

The Marauder arrived in a large cardboard box, suspended in the middle via a pair of cardboard-framed sheets of plastic. A foam pack was inflated inside the case to ensure the components within didn't shift during transit. Also inside the box was a carton containing the required cables and a handy-dandy binder containing the system info and driver discs. I'm kind of in love with the whole binder thing. They might not get it back when I return the PC.

The Marauder does not, however, come with an ammo belt and case, but that's nothing a trip to the Army surplus store can't fix.

The Case

Before we explore its innards, let's take a look at the Marauder's striking outtards. The line is the first built around Corsair's Vengeance C70 chassis. It's the sort of computer case one would expect to find sitting around an Army base, draped with camouflage netting for no good reason. Its steel exterior is as rugged as it looks, the simple metal construction taking me back to the days when I would build my own machines. This is the sort of case I'd pick out of a lineup at the local computer store.

Digital Storm's Budget Gaming PC Doesn't Sacrifice Power for a Reasonable Price

As tough as the case looks, it's actually rather user-friendly. A pair of handles at the top make lugging the massive beast about an easy feat, and those latches for the side panels are the sort of feature I want in every PC from now on. I open and close my computer a lot ? nearly as much as most people open their refrigerator ? so ease of access is a definite plus.

Digital Storm's Budget Gaming PC Doesn't Sacrifice Power for a Reasonable Price

Inside we've got tool-less drive bays and thumb-screws for all the card slots. With the exterior latches and these interior conveniences combined, this all adds up to me completely loosing track of all of my screwdrivers since I've been testing the unit.

The Digital Storm Marauder Level 4
Review configuration:

  • Chassis: Corsair's Vengeance C70
  • Processor: Intel Core i5 3570K 3.40 GHz (Quad Core)
  • Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-V LX (Intel Z77 Chipset)
  • System Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Corsair Vengeance Series
  • Power Supply: 600W Corsair GS
  • Hard Drive: 1TB (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache)
  • Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x)
  • Video Card(s): 1x AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB
  • Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition)
  • Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty
  • Price: $1,349

Available at Digital Storm

The Guts

The key to the Marauder's low price is the use of components that, while certainly not top of the line, are more than up to the task of making today's games entertain us for hours on end. Like the Intel Core i5 3570K ? it's not an i7, but you don't really need an i7. What would you do with an i7 anyway? You'd just spend it on stupid things.

And that Radeon HD 7870. But I don't like the Radeon cards! The Catalyst interface is slow and stupid! Can't we at least get an HD 7970? No, this card is just fine, and you'll be able to play the same games all the other kids are playing.

Yes, this is the sort of gaming PC my dad would have me buy instead of some $3,000+ powerhouse, convinced it would do the same job at half the cost. This is why I grew up eating store-brand SpaghettiOs. And you know what? Those store brand SpaghettiOs taste just fine.

The Level 4 Marauder hasn't made one complaint in the weeks I've been testing it. It's sat there stoically, pumping out brilliant graphics and dealing with all the spyware I've been inadvertently loading onto it with barely more than a whisper from its case fans. There are elements in the configuration I would change if I were building the machine on my own, but I'm not, and this works.

Actually, it works rather well.

The Performance

Benchmarks are something new for Kotaku PC hardware reviews, which up until now have simply told you how well a system plays Total War: Shogun 2 rather than shown you via numbered chart. While there's a danger that someone might see a PC review, scroll down to the chart and make their decision based solely on the numbers they find, I get to make charts, something I enjoy immensely, so it all balances out.

I went with Total War: Shogun 2, Batman: Arkham City and Metro 2033 for our regular stable of benchmarking games because a) we like these games and b) each one has a built-in benchmarking tool, leaving me more time to focus on charts showing off the average FPS for each game.

Digital Storm's Budget Gaming PC Doesn't Sacrifice Power for a Reasonable Price

Who still uses Direct X 9 anymore? Why, people that want their frame rate charts a bit lengthier than the DirectX 11 one.

Digital Storm's Budget Gaming PC Doesn't Sacrifice Power for a Reasonable Price

The Radeon HD 7870 takes a bit of a beating under DirectX 11, but the numbers are still well within acceptable range, except for maybe Metro 2033 and let's face it ? that game is a bit of a dick.

The Verdict

Digital Storm's Marauder has proven that a boutique gaming PC doesn't have to be an LED-lit pillar of pulsating awesome in order to perform its designated function. There is no custom etching here. There is no molded plastic. The window panel doesn't peer into an electric neon wonderland. It doesn't boot up to the sound of screeching guitar riffs, loudly declaring its intentions to rock your gaming world. It's just a simple, sturdy combination of wires and components specifically tuned to deliver stellar performance for a reasonable price.

Sales Training: A Common Closing Mistake

By John Holland, Chief Content Officer of CustomerCentric Selling? - The Sales Training Company

Read this article to learn the common closing mistake to avoid and?improve sales performance.

Sellers manage sales cycles in different ways, but execute a sequence of similar steps (initiate opportunities, discovery, need development, etc.). The last two steps are usually close and negotiate. Blurring them into a single step is a mistake that gets sellers into trouble. sales training companyClose and negotiate are two critical steps that should be kept separate and distinct.

Simply stated, closing is asking for an order. Issuing a proposal or submitting an RFP response can be viewed as closing, but the preferred way is asking a person to move forward with your proposal. Closing decision makers yields a high probability of getting orders. In many cases, only the vendor of choice is given this opportunity. Other vendors were invited to compete late in the process to provide pricing leverage to negotiate with the pre-determined vendor of choice.

A more challenging situation is closing non-decision makers. When asked to move forward, a common response from these buyers is: "I need your best price." How the seller responds will determine if close and negotiate morph into a single step.

Register now for?one of our sales training workshops.?

IMO life is too short to negotiate before buyers indicate they want to buy. To keep closing as a separate step, when pressured for better pricing ask the following question: "Are we the vendor of choice and is price the only obstacle?" If the answer is anything but yes, my suggested response is: "It appears you have to further evaluate your options. If you reach a point where we are the vendor of choice, at that time I'd like to see if we can reach agreement."

If you are the vendor of choice, you'll be given an opportunity to finalize the transaction. If you're not and you discount you leave a low price on the street that can be used to negotiate with their vendor of choice. In the event you are invited back in and they want to do business, if you discounted when asked, smart buyers make that the starting point for further negotiations.

If the buyer indicates you are the vendor of choice and you're talking to the decision maker, you can begin to negotiate. If you're with a lower level person that may say yes just to get a better price, respond with something like: "I'd like to see if we can reach agreement. Can we schedule a meeting or conference call with (the decision maker), my manager, you and me?" This question should smoke out requests for discounts when you aren't the vendor of choice and will get you where you want to be: negotiating with the decision maker.

You won't always be able to execute this approach but I hope you agree when you can make closing and negotiating separate activities the likely outcome will be a higher price.

GLAAD gives CW network high marks for diversity

NEW YORK (AP) ? The advocacy group GLAAD has given the CW network high marks among broadcast outlets for its portrayal of gay and lesbian characters. Meanwhile, cable networks Showtime, ABC Family, TNT and HBO all were given a favorable rating by the group.

The number of gay and lesbian images on TV held steady this year. But the range of impressions continued to grow, with those representations increasingly presented in a matter-of-fact manner rather than as curiosities, GLAAD found in its annual Network Responsibility Index. But two-thirds of all gay-and-lesbian-inclusive hours showcased white people, the study found, prompting GLAAD to call for networks to recognize a broader diversity within the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

"Americans expect to see their off-screen worlds represented onscreen, and today more than ever that includes LGBT people and families," said GLAAD president Herndon Graddick.

He pointed to the family of gay couple Mitchell and Cameron on ABC's "Modern Family" and to Emily, a teen who came out as a lesbian on ABC Family's "Pretty Little Liars."

They not only indicate "growing acceptance of our community," Graddick said, "but have found praise from viewers and critics alike at a time when visibility and acceptance of LGBT people is at an all-time high."

Conducted for the sixth year by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, the study tracked original prime-time programming on 10 major cable networks as well as the five major broadcast networks.

Behind broadcast front-runner CW (with gay-and-lesbian-inclusive hours at 33 percent), ABC and Fox swapped places from last year, ranking second and third place, respectively. NBC remained in fourth place. For the fourth year in a row, CBS held last place, the study found, with only 8 percent.

Among cable networks, former top-ranked MTV was placed with FX, TLC and USA as only "adequate."

But FX saw the biggest increase over last year, with its percentage of gay-and-lesbian-inclusive hours rising from 19 percent to 34 percent, thanks to programs like "American Horror Story" and "Archer."

Among the highlights in transgender images this year, GLAAD cited Chaz Bono's appearance as a contestant on ABC's "Dancing with the Stars."

"His very candid appearance on the program taught many that transgender Americans deserve respect and acceptance," Graddick said.

Marco Rubio: GOP Has Immigration 'Challenge' ? Peace and Freedom

By George?Stephanopoulos?|?ABC OTUS News

Florida Sen.?Marco Rubio?told me this morning that he agreed with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who said Tuesday that?you can?t just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate.?

Villaraigosa was referring to the number of prominent Hispanic Republicans slated to speak at the?Republican National Conventionthis week, but Rubio said the mayor?s message applies to both parties.

?I think what he?s saying, quite frankly, is true for both parties,? said Rubio,?who spoke to me this morning on ?Good Morning America.? ?Policies matter and, look, the Republican Party does have a challenge. We can?t just be the anti-illegal?immigration?party, we have to be the pro-legal immigration party.

?We have a broken system of immigration that needs to be fixed and we have a legal immigration problem because we have millions of people who are in this country without documents and we have to deal with that in a way that honors our legacy both as a nation of compassion and a nation of immigrants but also as a nation of laws. That?s a real challenge. That?s not an easy thing to do. We?re going to confront that not by pandering, not by making unrealistic promises but by trying to find a balanced approach to how to deal with it.?

Recent polls show that?Mitt Romney, the GOP nominee for president,?is struggling with Latino voters. Hispanics are a growing minority in the United States and a key demographic in Rubio?s home state of Florida, a crucial swing state in the presidential election. Romney has expressed views on immigration seen as being to the right of former?President George W. Bush?- who was for comprehensive?immigration reform?- while President Obama, who has much higher support among Latino voters, issued an executive order earlier this year that would?allow some undocumented immigrants legal status.

Rubio told me this morning that Romney would replace this policy.

?I think he?s going to replace it. That?s what I think you can expect from the Romney presidency and I think the obligation of some of us in the Congress is to find that permanent solution,? Rubio, 41, said. ?It was something I was working on, that I continue to work on, an alternative to the DREAM Act that allows us to continue to deal with that issue but not in a way that?s amnesty and not in a way that encourages illegal immigration in the future.?

Rubio, who is Cuban-American, is among several?Hispanic Republicans?who?have prominent roles?at the Republican National Convention this week. Rubio will introduce Romney Thursday night on the final night of the convention in Tampa, Fla., before the former Massachusetts governor formally accepts the GOP nomination for president.

?I hope to present to the people of the United States in the few minutes that I have, two things. A very unique human being, Mitt Romney, who has lived his life in a way that?s not just admirable but really a role model, irrespective of how people may feel about his policies, they may disagree with him on policies, but you look at the way he?s lived his life as a husband, as a father, as a member of his community, really a role model for younger Americans and what we should all aspire for our kids to be,? Rubio said.

?And then, also, the choice that America has between two very different views of government?s role in our economy. That?s really what this election is about. It?s not just a choice between a Democrat and a Republican, it?s a choice between two very different futures. I hope I can do that for him.?

Hope of greater global food output, less environmental impact of agriculture

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Can we have enough to eat and a healthy environment, too? Yes -- if we're smart about it, suggests a study published in Nature this week by a team of researchers from the University of Minnesota and McGill University in Montreal.

Global demand for food is expected to double by 2050 due to population growth and increased standards of living. To meet this demand, it is often assumed we will need to expand the environmental burden of agriculture. The paper, based on analysis of agricultural data gathered from around the world, offers hope that with more strategic use of fertilizer and water, we could not only dramatically boost global crop yield, but also reduce the adverse environmental impact of agriculture.

"We have often seen these two goals as a trade-off: We could either have more food, or a cleaner environment, not both," says lead author Nathaniel Mueller, a researcher with the University of Minnesota's Institute on the Environment and a doctoral student in the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences. "This study shows that doesn't have to be the case."

Mueller and colleagues used management and yield data for 17 major crops to take a big-picture look at how much water and nutrients it would take to bring under-performing farmlands to meet their food production potential. They also looked for places where fertilizer use could be cut down without substantially reducing crop yield. They found:

  • We could boost production 45 to 70 percent for most crops. The greatest opportunities for yield improvement are found in Eastern Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia, and South Asia.
  • Different inputs serve as limiting factors depending on the region and crop. Nutrients, for example, appear to be limiting corn production in Eastern Europe and West Africa and wheat production in Eastern Europe, while nutrients and water appear to limit rice production in Southeast Asia.
  • Worldwide, we could decrease nitrogen use 28 percent and phosphorus use 38 percent without adversely affecting yields for corn, wheat and rice. China stands out as a hot spot of nutrient overuse, but other areas, like the United States, Western Europe, and India, also have room to improve.
  • With strategic redistribution of nutrient inputs, we could bring under-performing lands worldwide to 75 percent of their production potential while only increasing global nitrogen use 9 percent and potassium use 34 percent -- and reducing phosphorus use 2 percent.

The researchers caution that their analysis is at a coarse scale and that many other factors, including land characteristics, use of organic fertilizers, economics, geopolitics, water availability and climate change will influence actual gains in crop production and reductions in adverse environmental impacts. Nevertheless, they are encouraged by the strong indication that closing the "yield gap" on under-performing lands -- previously identified as one of five promising points for meeting future food needs, along with halting farmland expansion in the tropics, using agricultural inputs more strategically, shifting diets and reducing food waste -- holds great promise for sustainably boosting food security.

"These results show that substantial gains are indeed possible from closing the yield gap -- and combining these efforts with improved management of existing lands can potentially reduce agriculture's environmental impact," Mueller says. "They also offer concrete suggestions as to where and how we can focus future efforts. This work should serve as a source of great encouragement and motivation for those working to feed the 9-billion-plus people anticipated to live on this planet in 2050 while protecting Earth's indispensible life support systems."

Thanks, college kid! You're subsidizing my classes

By Jon Marcus, The Hechinger Report

A sophomore at UC Berkeley, June Ahn comes from a family whose income is just enough to put her past the reach of much financial aid. So, like many students, Ahn is using loans to underwrite her education.

To make matters worse, she comes from Washington, not California, so she pays two and a half times as much as in-state tuition. And she pays it even though, as an underclassman, she?s still taking large-enrollment classes that cost the university much less to provide than smaller, upperclass courses and seminars.

It gives Ahn little consolation to know that some of her money is likely being used to subsidize the educations of her lower-income, in-state and junior and senior classmates.

?I?m not in a better financial position than any of the students I would be helping to subsidize,? said Ahn, whose anticipated major ? political science ? also is cheaper for the university to provide than majors for science and engineering students who, at UC Berkeley, are charged the same as she is. ?But I have an extra almost $10,000 that I still need to pay.?

More from The Hechinger Report

As a new academic year begins, growing scrutiny of record tuition and fees is drawing new attention to the longstanding cycle of subsidies like these on which American colleges and universities depend ? but which they would rather not discuss.

Rich kids subsidize poor kids. Out-of-state students subsidize in-state ones. Humanities majors subsidize science majors. Freshmen and sophomores subsidize juniors and seniors. Undergraduates subsidize graduate students. And international students subsidize everyone.

Now activists and legislators are pushing back against the Robin Hood-style use of some students? tuition revenues to pay for other students? financial aid. They?re pressing for different prices for different subjects based on the actual cost of instruction, and, in some states, even proposing an end to a perk under which taxpayers subsidize tuition for faculty children.

Still, many families and students seem as much in the dark about these practices as airline passengers who pay different fares for similar seats on the same flight to the same place.

?If you combine general financial illiteracy with the opaque nature of college financing, it?s surprising that anybody really knows what?s going on,? said Andrew Gillen, senior researcher at the American Council of Trustees and Alumni.

For universities, there?s an advantage in this, Gillen said: ?If somebody doesn?t know he?s paying more than the kid next to him, he doesn?t get upset.?

But if that student is paying full or nearly full tuition, higher-education experts said, it?s likely some of the money is going to lower-income classmates who aren?t.

?Schools have become more aggressive in this income-redistribution aspect of higher education,? said Richard Vedder, director of the Center for College Affordability and Productivity in Washington, D.C. ?There?s an economic-theory dimension to this, which is that there?s always a small class of students who have a lot of money, and the income-maximizing enrollment manager wants to zap it to these kids.?

At least 15 states have explicit policies under which some of the revenue from students who pay tuition at public universities goes to others who can?t cover the full cost, according to the State Higher Education Executive Officers, or SHEEO. In Arizona, for example, public universities channel about a quarter of tuition revenue into discounts, grants and other forms of financial aid. In North Carolina, at least 25 percent of money generated by any increase in tuition goes to such subsidies, while in California it is one-third of each tuition increase.

Critics say this penalizes not only full-tuition-paying, high-income parents and their students, but also middle-class families already being squeezed by escalating costs. In June, the Iowa Board of Regents ordered the practice to end in that state within five years. There, some $144 million a year in financial aid is redistributed to low-income students ? as well as high-achievers who don?t qualify for federal aid ? from the tuition their classmates pay. The regents called for the portion of tuition that now goes to truly needy students to be replaced by contributions from the universities? fundraising arms.

Similar appeals have come from the governor of Virginia, Arizona legislators and members of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors.

Since universities are also offering more scholarships to students with high grade-point averages and SAT scores, which elevates them in the all-important U.S. News & World Report college rankings ? and since many of those top students come from affluent families and don?t qualify for federal aid, Gillen said another trend is at work. ?Rich, dumb kids,? he said, ?are subsidizing rich, smart kids.?

Out-of-state students at public universities also are increasingly subsidizing in-state students. That?s because out-of-state tuition is almost always higher than in-state ? two and a half times as much for out-of-state than in-state students in the University of California system, for example. At the University of Virginia, out-of-state students pay almost twice what it actually costs to educate them; the rest helps pay for educating everybody else.

Numbers like that are why public universities are aggressively recruiting out-of-state students. About a third of students at the universities of Illinois, Virginia and Washington now come from out of state, and nearly 40 percent at the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At UC Berkeley, the proportion is nearly 30 percent, about six times what it was as recently as 2006. At UCLA and UCSD, almost one in every five students is from outside California.

So much in demand are out-of-state students that they?re more likely to be accepted for admission to both UC Berkeley and UCLA than in-state residents whose parents? taxes subsidize the universities. The California State University system recently announced that it would not accept in-state graduate students next spring; only out-of-state students, who pay more, are welcome to apply to Cal State graduate-degree programs.

International students also subsidize domestic ones. Eighty-one percent pay universities the full price, a much higher proportion than students generally, bringing in around $20 billion a year in tuition and living expenses, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Institute for International Education.

Freshmen and sophomores, meanwhile, whose introductory courses are often taught in large groups in giant lecture halls with help from low-paid teaching assistants, subsidize juniors and seniors, who pay the same tuition but cost from one and a half to two times more to educate, according to a SHEEO survey based on research conducted in Florida, Illinois, New York and Ohio. A member of the faculty at UCLA has separately calculated that the disparity is even greater: Classes averaging 200 students, he found, cost about $56 per student to teach at public universities, compared to $560 per student in classes averaging 20 students. Yet all are charged the same amount.

?The big introductory lectures with 400 students, there?s a lot of profit in that class,? said Gillen. ?And that?s used to subsidize smaller seminars for the upperclass students.?

Richard Cordray, director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, talks with MSNBC's Alex Wagner and the NOW panel about the rising cost of tuition across America and the burden of student loans.

Some of the money also goes to graduate programs that are expensive to operate.

?At the large research universities, the subsidization of graduate students is monstrously large,? Vedder said. ?A student in a Ph.D. program sits in seminars of six and eight students taught by a professor making $150,000 a year and gets an extremely costly education. At the same university, the freshman who?s taking Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Economics, sitting in lectures of 400 people ? these kids are paying the same tuition.?

Undergraduates in low-cost disciplines such as the humanities and social sciences also help to pay for students in subjects that cost more to teach, including fine arts, agriculture, law and engineering, the Delta Cost Project on Postsecondary Education reports, since they, too, all pay identical tuition.

A few universities are starting to charge different prices for different fields. At least 143 public universities now levy so-called differential tuition that varies by major and, in some cases, by year of enrollment, the Cornell Higher Education Research Institute found. The University of Maine, for instance, adds a $75 fee for engineering courses, and the University of Kentucky charges an extra $460 per semester for nursing students.
